As posted in another entry, Affordable Sport Climbing Gear, the most affordable sport climbing set available in Canada comes it at a total cost of $613.19
If you’ve recently inherited a pile of cash from some long lost relative, consider kitting up with the most expensive sport climbing gear money can buy in Canada.
Petzl Sitta harness* ($199)
*Mammut Realization Pants are $269.95, but you'd be getting pants and a harness making it too economical for the purpose of this post :)
Camp Matik belay device ($229.99)
Edelrid HMS Bulletproof Triple FG Carabiner ($44)
Arc’teryx C80 Chalk bag- ($49)
62.4 grams of Magic Chalk from Friction Labs ($16.50)
Black Diamond Shadow climbing shoes (239.99)
Petzl Sirroco helmet ($164.99)*
*Grivel makes the Stealth Carbon helmet, but is currently not offered by a Canadian vendor. Current retail price is $349.95 USD!
12 Edelrid Bulletproof or DMM Alpha Sport quickdraws ($420)
Edelrid Ohm (optional purchase for $159)
Metolius Anchor Chain ($64) with a DMM Boa Locksafe carabiner ($35) and two DMM Phantom Screwgates ($24)
70m Maxim Platinum 10.2mm rope ($427), get the 9.8mm version for $4 less!
Total cost: $1937.47 ($2096.47 with the Edelrid Ohm)
Why buy? Expensive yes, but some of the items on here are actually exceptional pieces.
The Petzl Sirroco is the lightest helmet in the market and is more durable than most other lightweight helmets.
The hot forged DMM Phantom is the lightest screwgate carabiner in the market.
The Edelrid Ohm is a worthwhile investment for climbing partners who have a significant weight difference between them.
Edelrid Bulletproof carabiners are pricey, but I expect you'll retire them far less often (never?) than other carabiners.
Why not?
The dinosaur/bird logo comes with a hefty price tag regardless of how much research and development went into the technical performance of… your chalk bag. Don't worry, this will soon be superseded by Black Diamond's Hot Forge Chalk Bag
Released in 2015, the Camp Matik was the first belay device to have an anti-panic feature. At the time, it was more than double the price of other devices in the market. Now that the Grigri+ is available, the Matik might become even less attractive to potential buyers or it becomes an alternative to the Grigri+ with buyers now willing to spend $200 for a belay device. I’ll go with the former.
If you can give me a reason why I should buy a Metolius Anchor Chain I'll add it here.
